The Arvor Academy offers a range of kayaking courses and guided paddling trips suitable for all levels of participants from complete beginners to experienced paddlers. Groups can be assured of patient and diligent instruction, maximising the experience as students work on paddling skills, water knowledge and boat safety. Students can undergo training and be assessed for various levels of BCU skills Star Test awards. Canoeing and kayaking courses operate from Stithians Reservoir and the Falmouth Estuary.
A fantastic hands-on sport that draws on teamwork, technique and an understanding of the natural environment, sailing courses can be tailored to suit all levels of students. Beginners will head to Stithians Lake to be introduced to basic dinghy sailing onboard on Toppas and Picos, before progressing to a 17-foot Cornish Crabber on the Carrick roads. With the wind in their sails, participants will learn the basic skills of sailboat handling whilst experiencing the coastline from a new perspective.
As well as a thrilling way to explore Cornwall’s waterways, powerboating is an essential skill for any student wishing to progress into the watersports or maritime industry. At the Arvor Academy we take trips and training sessions in and around Falmouth Harbour, onboard a 23-foot Cheverton motorboat.
Raft building is offered as part of a multi activity day at Stithians Lake that might also include kayaking or sailing. Raft building is an excellent team building activity that promotes achievement through working on a project with other students. All equipment is supplied and students are supervised by a safety boat.
With a beach for every wind direction, Cornwall is the perfect destination for the growing sport of kitesurfing. At the Arvor Academy we provide safe and comprehensive training at various locations depending on weather conditions. Our expert instructor has three years of teaching experience and we provide the latest equipment, making this a safe and exciting activity that can be enjoyed by groups of varying abilities. Stepping-stones to kitesurfing (or for those students that don’t want to get their feet wet), land kiting and kite buggying are thrilling and safe ways to harness the power of the wind, and can be enjoyed by groups of mixed abilities. We provide the latest equipment to ensure an enjoyable and rewarding experience. All students are instructed on procedures laid down by the IKO and BKSA.
Whilst receiving technical training that will develop their personal riding skills, students will learn about all aspects of mountain biking in an off- and on-road environment. Mountain biking along the Bissoe Mineral Tramways Trail (a designated cycle path which passes through historic mining sites) will put practical skills to the test, whilst bike maintenance and repair is also an important part of the learning experience. The Arvor Academy provides the latest mountain bikes, helmets and all relevant safety equipment.
Undertaken as part of a multi-activity day, archery can be provided at a range of locations across Cornwall. Focussing on co-ordination, technique and safety, this activity concentrates both the mental and physical faculties, and is ideal for individuals of various ages and abilities. All instruction is based on procedures laid down by the Grand National Archery Society.
Helping to instil confidence, navigation skills and the basic grasp of travel in various terrains, orienteering is an inspiring and motivating outdoor activity for young people. The activity takes place at Tehidy Woods, where skills are practised according to the appropriate level for the group. More advanced students can progress onto moorland navigation. All safety equipment is supplied.
Hillwalking trips take place in various stunning locations including Cornwall’s coastal footpaths, Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. With an assortment of walks catering for groups of various ages and abilities, hill walking is a fantastic way to explore the natural beauty of Cornwall. Many of the walks encompass short visits to either National Trust sites or designated Areas of Outstanding Beauty (AONB’s). All camping and safety equipment is provided. Half-day and full-day walking itineraries are available, with the option of an overnight camping expedition by request.
The ethos behind the Arvor Academy is to physically challenge and motivate its students. Activities such as circuit training, weight training, rope climbing or football training can be included into the programme to build teamwork, physical abilities, motivation, co-ordination and confidence.
Basic climbing techniques, rope skills and low-level bouldering are taught on indoor climbing walls, where all level of abilities are catered for. Building confidence and physical strength, students can then progress onto higher and more technical climbs. All safety equipment is supplied.

The Arvor Academy is an innovative company working to develop education through physical activities and confidence boosting challenges in Cornwall’s natural environment. Outside of the classroom, youth groups are motivated to achieve, get active and be inspired as they undertake a range of activities from kayaking and sailing to kiting and orienteering. In the hands of an expert instructor, groups can choose to hike along the South West Coast Path, scale to the county’s highest point on Bodmin Moor, sail and kayak on the Carrick Roads or Stithians lake, go kiting on Cornwall’s beaches, or go mountain biking along the mineral trails. And that’s just for starters; the list of activities on offer also includes power boating, raft building, traction kiting, archery, orienteering, hill walking, camping, football, physical training and climbing. A typical day is tailor-made to the weather conditions and requirements of the group. All kit, transport and safety equipment is provided, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.Whatever sort of adrenalin-fuelled adventure the children undertake, they will learn about teamwork, communication and personal fitness as they develop confidence and explore the great outdoors with an AALA licensed (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) instructor. The Arvor Academy works with schools, youth groups and disengaged children (aged 10 years plus), to provide education outside of the classroom in a safe, inspirational environment.
Arvor is Cornish for coastline, which is where many of the activities take place. Founder and group leader, Gary Bullen, is an AALA licensed (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) expert instructor with many years of experience. Gary has completed worldwide adventure expeditions to the North Pole, Everest, Alaska and Canada, and was a Physical Training Instructor in the Royal Marines for 22 years. Activities on offer include kayaking, sailing, power boating, raft building, kitesurfing, traction kiting, archery, orienteering, hill walking, camping, football, physical training and climbing. One-day courses are tailor-made to the weather conditions and requirements of the group. Suggested itineraries include a hike along the South West Coast Path followed by a kiting or a kayaking session, or a morning sailing on the Carrick Roads and an afternoon mountain biking along the mineral trails. High-spec kit, safety equipment and transport are provided for all activities. Groups are small (up to 8), to maximise education through personal development, improving personal fitness and awareness of the outdoor environment.
